JAZZ BANDS

The Durham Jazz Bands are extra-curricular groups that rehearse in the morning before school.  The groups perform for numerous school functions such as receptions, 5th grade orientation, academic pep rallies and Threads.  Field trips have been taken to elementary schools, community functions, nursing homes, jazz festivals and Disney World.

Instrumentation in the groups includes alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar and drum set.  In order to become a member of one the groups, students will need to perform an audition for the director.  Students that meet requirements will be accepted into either Jazz Band I or Jazz Band II. Rehearsals for Jazz I are on Tuesdays and Thursday at 8:00-8:45 A.M.   Rehearsal for Jazz II are on Monday and Wednesdays at 7:50-8:45. It is very important that students be at all of these rehearsals.  There will attendance requirements in order to remain a member of these performing organizations.

This is an exciting opportunity for young musicians.  The kids have a great time along with learning a great deal about musical performance.  Many Durham jazz musicians have gone on to play in high school and college jazz programs.
