Character Connections

Raising Dragons
Raising Dragons is a fun and adventurous book that teaches students many character traits necessary for commitment and compassion. Both the dragon and the girl showed kindness (being gentle, willing to help, friendly and considerate) towards each other. The dragon, though he was a fire breathing dragon, was always gentle toward the girl. The girl was very loyal (showing a sense of commitment and duty) to her dragon, making sure that she took care of him by providing him with food and water. The dragon also demonstrated loyalty by helping the girl’s family with their farm.
Wisdom is showing good judgment, insight and the ability to make reasonable decisions. Though the character loved her dragon, she knew that it was time for him to go with the rest of his dragon family because he had outgrown the farm. Sometimes making a wise decision can be a hard task, but when a person is strong enough to do so, they prove they are a responsible and compassionate person.
The girl in this story demonstrated many amazing character traits; however, she lacked one very important virtue which we need to have. This applies to adults, too. Showing respect for authority demonstrates the ability to accept no, follow directions/rules and being respectful. The girl continued to go the cave where the dragon’s egg was even after her father told her to stay away from it. Parents are responsible for their childrens’ safety and well being; by following rules children prove they can be trusted.
ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSION STARTERS:
Careers: Have children begin to explore their dreams and wishes by naming different jobs. Have the students close their eyes and dream about what they would like to do when they grow up. After they have thought of at least 2 jobs, have them draw and color what they would like to do when they grow up.
Decisions: Introduce the word “decision” to students. Explain that there are times when we have to make decisions, or make up our minds. Provide the students with examples of decisions they may have to make in school and life. Conduct an open discussion about why they chose that decision.
