Character Connections
Black Cat
In this entertaining and rhythmic story, a somewhat homeless cat travels through some city streets that at times may seem dangerous. The black cat, the main character, gives an exemplary performance in COURAGE and FLEXIBILITY. He shows RESILIENCE and SELF-RELIANCE as he makes his way through the city that he calls home in order to find food, rest and entertainment. This story offers an opportunity to discuss with students TOLERANCE of others who have a different lifestyle than their own. A comparison may be drawn between the life this cat leads and the life of a suburban pet cat. This can be further extended into variations of advantages that many of our children at Davis and their families enjoy.
Hopefully, it will help the students reflect on their blessings and encourage a GRATEFUL attitude and COMPASSIONATE feelings for others who are not as fortunate.
DISCUSSION STARTERS:
Courage: Explain that sometimes what we fear are those things that are unfamiliar to us. Ask students what would intrigue them about living in an urban setting. Ask for examples of how they have showed courage.
Acceptance: Recognition if the diversity of others, their opinions, practices and cultures. Discuss the variety of students in the classroom (hair color, ethnicity, language spoken at home, gender sizes etc) Define and discuss tolerance (accepting people who are different from you.)
Additional thoughts for teacher’s reflection: Have groups make lists of things they can do to be good citizens and show compassion to others in their families, school and community. Have students think of ideas where they can contribute to their community.
