Calendar Math
Our calendar time is based
on Patsy Kanters' Calendar math program with my own additions. Each
month we add new mathematical components to the calendar activities.
In the months of September and August we start out with 4 areas of focus.
-
Calendar-focus on knowing the days of the week
in order, knowing the names of the months, developing number sense, counting
with one-to-one correspondence, counting on and counting back, reading,
comparing and ordering numbers 1 to 31, recognizing, analyzing and extending
patterns & solving problems and using mental math
-
Birthday Graph-focus on knowing the months of
the year, counting with one-to-one correspondence, counting, comparing
and ordering small quantities, collecting and recording data, & creating
and interpreting a scatter graph
-
Clip Collection-focus on developing number sense,
counting with one-to-one correspondence, counting and grouping by 10's
and 1's, matching quantities with numerals, comparing and ordering quantities,
counting on and counting back, discovering number patterns and using mental
math & solving problems
-
Counting Tape-focus on developing number sense,
counting with one-to-one correspondence, counting and grouping by 10's
and 1's, matching quantities with numerals, comparing and ordering quantities,
counting on and counting back, discovering number patterns and using mental
math & solving problems
Throughout the year the following areas of focus
will be introduced.
-
Daily Domino-focus on one-to-one correspondence,
comparing and ordering quantities of 9, recognizing small quantities, visualizing
amount for numbers 1 through 9, matching quantities and numerals &
seeing sets from 1 to 9 as combinations of smaller sets
-
Daily Depositor-focus on counting with one-to-one
correspondence, matching quantities and numerals, reading numerals to 31,
grouping and counting by 10's and 1's & sorting by one attribute
-
Every Day Graph-focus on collecting and recording
data on a graph, reading and interpreting a bar graph, counting and comparing
small quantities & counting with one-to-one correspondence
-
Every Day Estimation-focus on estimating and
comparing number, weights, capacity, using the language of comparing, measuring
length using nonstandard units comparing and ordering lengths,
In addition to the above calendar components,
I also include the following.
-
Weather Graph
-
Temperature Graph
-
Hundreds Chart
-
Money Graph
-
More than/Less than Comparison-local teams with
wins/loses compared
-
Tooth Graph
