Guided
Reading
During guided reading, I work with small groups of children. These
groups are flexible and change as the needs of the students change.
Students are frequently assessed on developmental reading skills.
Guided reading is done by the classroom teacher during literacy centers.
Guided reading begins once the children are ready and have mastered many
of the pre-reading skills. Each child will have their own individual
books to read through.
We do a "picture walk" through the book first. During this time any
new vocabulary words or phrases may be introduced. The story will
be discussed and/or punctuation marks will be pointed out. Before
they read we discuss good reading strategies. Next, the students
read the text aloud several times. As they read, I am listening and
watching them read. After they read good reading habits that were noticed
and discussed. Then, new skills and strategies are introduced and
discussed. Once again, I listen to the students read. Sometimes
a follow-up activity is planned for a specific book.
