During Shared Reading time the students and teacher enjoy stories together. The first book that is read with the class is a book that is chosen by one of the students. This is a familiar story that the students have read before and want to reread. Children love to hear stories that are familiar to them. All of us read the story together-sharing the story.
Then I choose a new story to introduce to the students. We usually talk about the cover picture and the title. Then I read the whole story through pointing to the text for one-to-one correspondence and left-to-right tracking. We sometimes stop and predict depending on the nature of the story. We may read this story 2-3 times and then it is put aside with other favorites. I love it when I hear- "Read it again!" This lets me know that I have chosen yet another good story. I invite the students to join in when they start to recognize the patterened text of the story. These first two stories are mainly for enjoyment.
Now the third story is one that I have chosen to teach a specific skill. The story will be one that the students are familiar with and have heard many times before. I will use some part of the story to work on a reading skill. Each book has several different concepts that can be developed from the text. Below is a sample list of skills that we may work on. Please keep in mind that there are many skills that will not be listed.
