The Georgia Children's Book Award was established in 1968 by the University of Georgia. The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia, and to introduce them to books of literary excellence. Books are nominated for the award by teachers and media specialists from the state of Georgia. The final list of 20 nominees are selected by a committee of teachers and media specialists (chaired by a member of the faculty from the Department of Language and Literacy Education). The students are asked to read, or have heard read aloud, at least 10 of the books from the list. Then in March their class will be invited to the Media Center to cast their vote for their favorite title. Ms. Robinson will tally up the votes, announce a winning title for Lewis and then submit all the votes to the University of Georgia. In March the book receiving the most votes from students across the state will receive the Georgia Book Award for 2007-2008. REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE: All classrooms K-3 can either sign-up for storytime in the Media Center to hear the nominees read or teachers may read them to their classes on their own. Ms. Robinson will keep track of which classes have heard which stories and will invite those classes that are eligible to vote to the Media Center in February. |
