Storytime & Book Exchange

First Grade students visit the Library frequently for book exchange and storytimes.  Sope Creek Elementary participates in the Georgia Book Award program every year, and very often the students will hear stories from the nominee list.

Research & Library Skills

In addition to regular storytimes, first grade students also receive information literacy instruction.  These lessons occur in conjunction with classroom projects and units.

During the 2006-2007 school year, first grade students will participate in several lessons collaboratively planned by the grade level teachers and the Library Media Specialist.

In the Spring, first grade students continued their use of reference books to locate information by learning about Magnets.  This time, the packets were graded so that the Library Media Specialist could gather data about the progress of the students.

In the Fall, first graders visited the Library to learn about how to use the elements of a non fiction book to find information.  They were in the midst of their Weather unit in science, and so the Information Skills lesson was designed around that subject.

After an introduction and some discussion about the Table of Contents and Index in non fiction books, students were asked to answer questions about weather by using non fiction books.  The question sheets were assembled to create a packet of information that could be used in later classroom lessons and for reference.

Bibliographic Format & Copyright

First graders are capable of being responsible and ethical users of information.  Part of this responsibility is giving credit where credit is due.  Cobb County schools use the MLA style as the basis for all format and citation questions.

Using the MLA format as a guide, Sope Creek uses a modified version for each grade level.  Click here to view the first grade bibliographic format template.
