Dr. Kattoula's Bio

Philosophy of Education

My teaching philosophy is based on the idea that the task of a teacher is not just to put a certain body of knowledge into the students' heads, but rather to enable students to understand it and to make independent study in the field.

A teacher should be a facilitator, allowing the students to inquire about science and learn science from experience (Bruner, 1996).   I try to instill in my students to respect the universal entities and begin to inquire how did all this come about in such a short time.   When teaching physics it is important to convey the big picture and to place the taught material in the general scheme of science.

As teachers it is not enough to tell students, what is known--we must explain why it is studied, how progress have being made in the field, and how to learn physics by doing it. I like my students to show creativity and curiosity, and get them to stop learning passively but begin to assemble there knowledge actively (Jonassen, 1991).

As a teacher of science I have always tried to instill in my own life as well as that of my students that science is not something to be uncomfortable with, but something that is happening in and around us and it is part of our lives. Making science part of our lives will allow us to develop good experience that will be useful in the future to relate the current knowledge being presented to the past (Ausubel, 1963).

I try to explain to the students that the nature of science is always changing as more and more minute details of what has always been present in our universe are discovered. Science is interesting, it is powerful; but it is only our minute understanding of a small part of a universe far more comprehensive than our present knowledge allows us to completely imagine.
