Hillgrove Senior Project

                          Senior Project
The Senior Project program is a performance assessment and requirement (from basic students to honor students) for 12th graders with these four components:

  • A research paper on a topic of the student’s choice

  • A project related to the paper

  • A portfolio

  • A presentation to a panel comprised of community members and school staff

Research paper
Students choose a subject and obtain approval by their faculty advisory committee. Topics can be on an extremely wide range of subjects. Main requirement – must be a “stretch” for the student; must be “stretching” beyond previous achievement levels.

Product in relation to the research
Can be a written project, art, photography, science, engineering, construction, etc.

Portfolio
A physical display of the steps, the process used, the phases, etc.

Presentation
Present to a panel comprised of community members and school staff. The panel evaluates what the students have to say and the manner in which it is said. They also ask questions to the students about their area of research.

Some Benefits experienced in Senior Project schools

  • Students participating in Senior Project have acquired new skills, greater self-confidence, and more focused career plans.

  • Some students have been offered scholarships or jobs.

  • College bound students become better prepared for the transition to college work.

  • Non-college bound students gain skills and confidence they can transfer to the work place.

  • Unmotivated students have become high achievers during this process.

  • As a result of their students participating in Senior Project, many educators have raised their expectations and standards.

  • Community members at some sites have rallied around the Senior Project concept, volunteering their time and support, and publicizing the program to a wider audience.
