McClure Updates
As a part of the reorganization of middle schools, schools will have an
advisement program in the 2008-2009 school year. At McClure, students will meet
with their advisement groups weekly for thirty minutes. Groups of approximately
15-20 students will meet with a staff member to focus on topics such as
organization, study skills, anti-bullying, social skills and other topics. The
primary purpose of the advisement program is to allow students to build
relationships with other students and adults within the school community.
At McClure, we will be dividing our students into family groups made up of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. By having a mixture of age levels in the advisement groups, we feel that older students will have an opportunity to develop leadership skills and that a more family-friendly environment will be created within the school. This is done effectively within scout groups and church groups and we anticipate it being successful in the school setting as well. You will receive more information regarding advisement as the program develops.
McClure’s schedule will remain the same in the sixth and seventh grade. Students will continue to take four academic classes daily, with reading being taught through the other content areas.
With the increased rigor of the math curriculum in the middle school years, and the requirement for students to pass the CRCT in reading and math in the eighth grade in order to be promoted to high school, we will be making some changes in the eighth grade schedule. Students will continue to be on an A/B block schedule with modifications. All students in eighth grade will take 90 minutes of math daily. The other academic classes (science, social studies, language arts, foreign language/reading) will be 90 minute classes every other day. We believe the increased instructional time in math will greatly benefit our eighth grade students.
