| Access to the Media Center Students arriving at school between 8:15 am and 8:45 am require specific passes to be in an area outside of Study Hall. Students who wish to use the Media Center before 8:45 need a pass signed the day before by Ms. Klodnicki or Ms. Moore. Students on their way to their pod after 8:45 may drop by the Media Center to return or check-out a book. However, once in the pod, or in class during the day, a student must request permission from a teacher and get a signed agenda to go to the Media Center. Check-out Policy Two (2) books, fiction and/or non-fiction, may be checked out at any one time for up to 2 weeks and may be renewed for another 2 weeks. Current magazines are kept on shelf display. Back issues of magazines may be checked out overnight and a reference book may be checked out for overnight use. Reference books and magazines must be returned before homeroom the next day. Overdue Penalty An overdue book or magazine must be cleared from a student's record before another item may be checked out. Although fines are not charged, a student must pay for a lost book using either exact cash, or a check made payable to Dodgen Middle School. Computer Disks Students are NOT allowed to bring disks into school for use on any of the school computers. Flash drives, however, are permitted. Printing Printing is only done by permission. The Media Center has a printer (black ink only), networked to twenty-eight computers for student use. PowerPoints are never to be printed. Students and teachers should always choose the "File, Print" option in order to direct the printing to the appropriate printer. The Toshiba Printer/Copier is an option for class set copies for teachers. OPAC Catalog The Dodgen collection is maintained with the "Destiny" computer program. Workstations designated as search stations should remain on this site at all times for drop-in patrons. By clicking on the Destiny Search icon, found under their student log-in at school, students may also search the computerized card catalog by typing in a title, author, key word, or subject. On the left of the Destiny search page is a very useful button called "Visual Search" which organizes the entire collection into pre-sorted categories. For example, click on Visual Search, then click "animals". The next page will provide icons of various animal groups, including "pets". Click on "pets" and get fiction and non-fiction titles on various animals as pets. Or, click on Visual Search, then "Reading Programs", then "AR", then "Fantasy". A box appears where you can put in a reading level. Type in "6", and titles will come up for fantasy books with a grade level range for 6th grade. |
