GCLP-Gangs Can Lead to Prison

 En Espanol (click here)

Mission Statement:  GCLP (Gangs Can Lead to Prison) is a prevention group working together to promote a gang free environment within our school and our community.

Griffin Middle School is proud to have a gang prevention group led by the school social worker, Elena Fenner.  The group was originally formed in the 2003/2004 school year.  Originally, the members were all of Hispanic decent and GCLP stood for “Grupo Contra Las Pandillas”.  At the end of the 03/04 year, the group members decided to broaden its membership to include any student who wanted to participate.  The current group has 43 members and meets on an as needed basis.  All members of GCLP sign a contract stating that they are not currently in a gang and that if it is discovered that they join a gang or participate in any gang activities they will not be allowed to continue to participate in the group.

The following is a list of some of the activities our group is currently working on or has participated in since its inception:

·    Terry Ford (Cobb Co. Juvenile Court Probation Officer- Gang Suppression Program) and Officer Bill Turner (Smyrna Police Department) have each made a presentation to the group addressing the gang problem and providing ideas on how to be proactive in dealing with this problem within our school as well as our community.

·    All members participated in a full day workshop on the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” presented by Luisa Resendiz (Specialist with the Prevention/Intervention Center).

·    Members have painted anti-gang/ anti-drug ceiling tiles which are  prominently displayed in the main office of our school.

·    GCLP T-shirts have been graciously donated by the Lassiter High School Key Club.  By wearing the shirts, our group makes a clear statement to the other students that we stand united against gangs.

·    A committee comprised of GCLP members met to develop our group’s mission statement.

·    Members have made anti-gang posters and displayed them throughout our school.

·    We will be taking an educational field trip to the Cobb Co. Prison for a PTA sponsored program called

       Consequences of Crime.

·    We currently have a three committees working on projects:

- Developing a link to the school web page for our group

            - Writing a play about gangs and the dangers they present

            - Researching information about gangs to share twice a month on the morning announcements
