A Message from the Principal
Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year
Dear
Wheeler Family:
Welcome
back! I am the “Proud” Principal
of Wheeler High School. We are looking forward to another outstanding year.
Last year went by so fast and there are many things to celebrate. The year
ended with an incredible graduation ceremony. Our incoming seniors have big
shoes to fill.
We will
continue to focus on student achievement, school safety, a positive school
climate, and strong relationships among teachers, students, parents, and the
community. I am counting on everyone to do their parts in keeping Wheeler
performing at high levels in all
areas.
Construction
has begun and our campus has been altered to meet the demands of the
project. We have added over
twenty trailers to account for the classrooms we are losing from the main
building which will be torn down to make room for the new building.
I can’t tell you how hard our teachers and staff have worked to
prepare their rooms and the building for the first day of school.
They have put forth phenomenal effort and I am truly proud.
We will not let the demands of construction detract from our
students’ high school experiences or prevent high quality instructional
programs. Please stay tuned to our
Renovation Link on our web site for updates on construction.
As many of
you know, Wheeler High School did not meet the minimum requirement for
graduation rate this year of 85 percent.
Wheeler’s graduation rate for the 2011 school year was 84.7 percent
and our multiyear average was 84.93 percent.
With that said the final tally for graduation rate is not complete
until the summer graduates are calculated in the formula and this does not
put us on the Needs Improvement List.
As we move forward, we will
continue to support and mentor all students to stay in school and to
successfully move forward. Our
counselors and school social worker will continue to conference with
students at all grade levels about attendance concerns and the importance of
staying in school. At-risk
seniors will continue to be linked with a teacher and an administrator to
provide guidance and motivation throughout the year.
We will ramp up efforts to build relationships and maintain the lines
of communication with parents at all grade levels to help us keep students
motivated. It will take all of
us to meet the graduation rate as it moves to 90 percent for the 2012 school
year.
I am proud
to say that our Graduation Test Scores were excellent last year.
Our overall math score was 91.7 percent meet/exceeds.
This is an increase of 7 percentage points from last year and well
over the state minimum percent of 81.2 percent meeting/exceeding.
Our overall language arts score was 94 percent which is consistent
with last year and well over the state minimum percent of 90.8 percent
meeting/exceeds.
I am truly
honored to be a “Wildcat” and we will work hard to continue the traditions
and successes of Wheeler High School. I can’t wait to see all of your
smiling faces on the first day of school.
“Go Cats!”
