Essential Questions:

How does learning about economics affect the financial decisions in your life in the future?

In what way does economics play a role in life?

How do issues of economics influence choices?

Rationale:

For students in elementary school, the social world is expanding and taking a firmer shape as they acquire new experience. The activities in this unit build on the gifted student’s unique world. It is a world with grown-ups who work, earn money, buy things, and make choices. It is a world in which they, too, must make choices, such as how to spend their free time, or whether to save for a new bicycle or try to have the old one repaired. These lessons help teachers enter the student’s world and tap their natural eagerness to learn and to interact with their peers. An economically literate population is essential to the well-being of our nation. The definition of economic literacy embraces more than just mastery of cognitive tests. Outcomes of economic literacy include responsible citizens, productive workers, knowledgeable consumers, prudent savers and investors, effective participants in the global economy, and lifelong decision makers.
