SY 2008-09 Information

Garrett's Curriculum Night will be on Thursday, November 13 from 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM.  Mark your calendars and plan
to attend our event.  Join the fun as teachers present:

  • ELA - games focusing on narrative and persuasive writing standards elements
  • P.E./Health - figuring out friendships and relationships
  • Math - curriculum-related games
  • Social Studies - experience cultures around the world
  • Science - "Thinking Like A Scientist"
  • Drama - 7th grade Advanced Drama presentation at 7:30 PM in the theater

 

  • The Cobb County School District’s high school magnet programs provide opportunities for committed students to pursue an advanced course of study in a specific focus area while earning a college preparatory diploma. Magnet programs are coordinated through the district’s Advanced Learning Programs Office, with transportation for accepted students provided from specific collector points. Magnet students in good standing are eligible to participate in all school activities at the magnet school. Open House dates and program descriptions for the individual magnets are listed below, as well as on individual magnet websites. Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to attend these informational meetings.  Click here for more information.

     Application Deadline: Applications will be available at the middle schools and online the first week in October. Applications must be postmarked on or before the first Friday in December of the student’s 8th grade year.

  • 8th grade parents and students are invited to attend the rising 9th grade parent/student informational meeting held in the South Cobb High School theater.  The meeting will be on Tuesday, October 7 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM and will cover "Getting Prepared for High School: A Guide to High School Success".

Did you know that the Media Center is not just a place for reading a book, but also where students learn information skills that will prepare them to live and work in society?  Join your school’s Media Committee in making decisions that affect our students’ success in school.  The Media Committee is made up of dedicated teachers, students and parents like you who will assist with creating exciting programs, planning for the year, and purchasing materials for the Media Center.  For more information, contact Mrs. Zimmerman in the Media Center.

Garret Yearbook Information:  Order your Garrett Middle School yearbook for only $25.  Put your money in a payment envelope and into one of the black boxes located in the commons area. 

South Cobb AREA 1 Schools Make the Grade in 2007-2008
AREA 1 Schools: Pebblebrook High School, South Cobb High School, Floyd Middle School, Garrett Middle School, Lindley Grade 7-8 Academy, Lindley Grade 6 Academy, Austell Primary and Intermediate Schools, Bryant Primary and Intermediate Schools, Clarkdale Elementary School, Clay Elementary School, Harmony Leland Elementary School, Mableton Elementary School, Riverside Primary and Intermediate Schools, Russell Elementary School, Sanders Primary and Intermediate Schools, and Sky View Elementary School.

The results are in and Area 1 schools climb to new heights in improving student performance on state testing and meeting the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements for the state of Georgia under the Federal No Child Left Behind Act.

This year in AREA 1….

  • All 13 elementary schools made AYP
  • Both high schools are no longer on Needs Improvement Status…no students are eligible to leave Area 1 for other schools on School Choice
  • All 3 middle schools made AYP and 2 middle schools for the first time in four years
  • All elementary schools and middle schools qualify as Title I schools and all made AYP
  • All schools met the second indicator requirements (attendance or graduation rate)

Parents and Students - information regarding the 2008-09 Safe Rider Program can be found here.  We encourage you to complete the Safe Rider contract for your child and return it to your child's bus driver.

 

Dr. Page received the 1st Place award for Outstanding Middle School Principal through the Georgia  PTA organization.  He was nominated by our own local PTSA along with other principals throughout Georgia and was recognized at the Georgia PTA Annual Convention & Leadership Training held in July at the Georgia International Convention Center.  Congratulations your achievement, Dr. Page!



 

  • Check us out!  Garrett made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the fourth year in row and we have recently been named a Title I School of Distinction.  We appreciate and are very proud of all the hard work made by students and teachers alike in receiving such a great honor.
  • We have great gains made by three of our staff:
    ---Tia Amlett promoted from teacher to our new 6th grade Assistant Administrator
    ---Joseph Horton
    , our 6th grade Assistant Administrator, promoted to become our new Assistant Principal
    --- Susan Blackwell, 8th grade teacher, receiving Master Teacher certification from the state Georgia
  • Congratulations to Dr. Page for being named the South Cobb Citizen of the Year for 2008.  The award honors a citizen who has made an positive impact to Cobb County and has demonstrated through exceptional deeds that he or she has made the South Cobb area a better place to live.  Garrett is very honored and proud of Dr. Page and his accomplishment.  Thanks, Dr. Page, for making Garrett great!

Leslie Goldman, 7th grade teacher, participated in the four-week Fulbright-Hays professional development where she traveled in and around Hungary and the Czech Republic.  The academic program provides cultural immersion and interaction with faculty and administrators of universities and schools.  Participants also experienced visits to educational and religious institutions, historical and archeological sites and developmental projects. 



Your opportunity to visit our school and get acquainted with your student's teacher will be on Thursday, August 7 from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at our Meet and Greet.  Please join us at that time in the theater.

The first day of school for all students of Cobb County Schools will be Monday, August 11.  Our school hours are Monday through Friday, 8:40 A.M. until 4:15 P.M.
