The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program - Students interested in being nominated for the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program, come see your counselor.  Kell can nominate one person who demonstrates commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership, to compete for this $1000 award.  We will receive nomination materials the week of September 29.  This scholarship's deadline is December 12, 2008.

 

AXA Foundation Scholarship - The AXA Foundation, a Proud National Sponsor of PTA, offers a signature program, AXA Achievement, which provides resources that help make college possible: access and advice.  On August 25th, our 2009 AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report launched: 52 scholarships of $10,000 and $25,000 to students across the nation. Application deadline is December 15th, 2008.  More information and downloadable applications, which can be filled out online, are available at www.axa-achievement.com.

 

MetroPCS Community Scholars Program - MetroPCS is awarding $1000 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue education in college or university programs.  Consideration will be given to students who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in volunteerism and community service, in addition to academics and other criteria.  Applications can be picked up in the counseling office or online at www.metropcs.com/scholarhsip beginning October 13.  Deadline is December 15, 2008.  Finalists will be notified by March 2 and winners by April 2.

 

2009 “Wonders of Plastics” Essay Contest  Open to all high school students, the essay must be sponsored by a teacher and must meet certain requirements.  Entries must be received by Friday, December 19,2008.  Forms are available in the career center.

 

New! Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program -  The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is a $1,500 award, renewable for up to three additional years.  The scholarship is intended for students who is in the top 5% of the senior class, an unweighted GPA of a 3.5, and an SAT score of at least an 1150 (CR and Math only), or ACT of at least a 25.  Kell can nominate one student from the student body to go into the state application pool, so students are asked to submit their applications to the counseling office by December 19, 2008 for nomination consideration.  Applications and directions can be downloaded (application / directions) or picked up in the counseling office.

 

 Making College and Career Count One national $5,000 winner and 5 regional $1,000 scholarship to high school seniors who demonstrate the “winning characteristics”.  To apply you must view a MakingCollege and Career Count presentation. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest - Students are invited to participate in this essay contest and compete for awards between $500 and $5000.  Students must be in grades 9-12.  For more information and complete guidelines,  visit  www.jfklibrary.org.  Deadline is January 10, 2009.

 

Gates Millennium Scholarship - The Gates Millennium Scholarship is one of the most prestigious and lucrative awards in the country.  This scholarship seeks to pay the way for outstanding students who have significant financial need and demonstrated leadership skills.  Applicants must complete a Nominee Personal Information Form and request both a nomination and recommendation to complete the appropriate respective forms.  One thousand students will be selected based on specific criteria, which can be found at www.gmsp.org.  Applications can be completed at this webpage (recommended method) or picked up in the counseling office.  Deadline is January 12, 1008.

 

NEW!  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority - Scholarship for African-American senior females who live or attend school in Cobb, Cherokee, North Fulton, or Paulding County.  Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA to qualify.  Awares range from $2000 to $6000.To receive 10 additional bonus points toward winning the scholarship, attend an image building workshop on Feb. 21 - for an application and more information visit www.dstmrac.com or visit the Kell Counseling Office.  Deadline is January 24, 2009.

 

McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship Award - The McKelvey Foundation awards a $40,000 scholarship (awarded over 4 years) to a high school senior who has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school.  This award is not based on academic achievement or financial need; awards are based solely on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit.  Visit www.mckelveyfoundation.org to apply.  Deadline is January 25, 2009.

 

Margie Hatfield Scholarship - The Margie Hatfield Scholarship was established by the Eastern Cobb County Council (ECCC) PTA in 1990 to honor Ms. Hatfield who served as ECCC PTA President from 1977-1980.  Ms. Hatfield also served on the State and National PTA Boards and she continues to work tirelessly for the welfare and education of young people.  These $1,000 scholarships are granted to one senior from each ECCC high school and are awarded based on academic success, leadership, involvement, and community service.  They are funded by private donations and by local units within the ECCC PTA network.  Applications are available in your counselors' office or can be accessed at http://www.ecccpta.org/ECCCMHScholarship.htm.  Applications are due January 30, 2009.

 

Princeton Prize in Race Relations sponsored by Princeton University Open to students in grades 9-12 who are doing outstanding work in their schools or communities to advance the cause of race relations.  The prize will include a $1,000 cash award and an all expense paid trip to Princeton University to attend The Princeton Prize Symposium on Race.  Deadline for application is January 31, 2009.  Applications and additional information are available at www.princeton.edu/PrincetonPrize

 

Tuition Giveaway - mental_floss magazine, Borders, and Merriam-Webster are hosting an essay contest (750 words) for a prize of $10,000.  Five winners will be chosen from entries that submit the best answer to the question: "Why are you the most deserving person on the planet to win a scholarship?"  Winning essays must be truly memorable. NEW! 2008 KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program  $5,000/year, open to student’s with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public institution.  Students must have a min. National Commission for Cooperative Education - Two hundred merit co-op renewable scholarships of $6,000 each will be awarded.  Students must apply and be accepted at one of the following schools: CW Post Campus of Long Island University, Johnson & Wales University, Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Toledo, Drexel University, Kettering University, Pace University, University of Cincinnati, Wentworth Institute of Technology.  For more information and an application, visit www.co-op.edu or in the Kell Counseling Office.  Deadline is February 15, 2009 - early submission is strongly encouraged.

 "Liga de Campeones” (League of Champions) Scholarship Program - The “Liga de Campeones” (League of Champions) scholarship program, is sponsored by Wendy’s and Georgia Power. Univision 34, with the support of Wendy’s and Georgia Power, has brought back the popular scholarship program initiated for Hispanic high school seniors in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and surrounding counties!  From October 2008 until May 2009, Univision 34 Atlanta will accept applications for our student–of-the-month program. The program recognizes Hispanic high school seniors who excel in academic success, athletic achievement or community involvement.  Click here for Rules and Regulations.  Wendy’s, Georgia Power and Univision 34 realize the needs and challenges that Hispanic youth faces are substantial.  The extraordinary 12th graders selected and honored will receive:

 BigSun Scholarship - The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. They are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation - Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation hosts the High School Internet Challenge (HSIC).  The HSIC is a national academic quiz program and is open to every high school student in Cobb County.  The HSIC is an ongoing, online tournament-style academic quiz competition that turns high school subjects into fun team competitions and scholarship opportunities.  Scholarships are awarded to students in 9-12 grades.  Visit www.cksf.org for more information and to participate.

 

Need a Lift? College Financial Aid Handbook - Published by the American Legion, this handbook is available in the counseling office or online at www.needalift.org.  This handbook is filled with scholarships, grants, fee waivers, student loans, and the organizations that offer them.  They've also included information to help you select a school, apply for student financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), learn about loan forgiveness programs, understand tax credits, and much more. 

 

FAFSA - The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that everyone interested in receiving any type of financial aid should fill out.  Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov for more information and to apply.  This is the way to determine eligibility for many federally sponsored grants (Pell, for example), work study programs, or loans.  This is also one of the ways to apply for HOPE funds.  Parents and seniors should fill this out as close to January 1 as possible, but not before, during the senior year.  Students and parents will also need a PIN number to fill it out electronically, found at www.pin.ed.gov.  Lots of very good information can be found at the FAFSA website in addition to the application.

 

Atlanta Scholarships - www.atlantascholarships.com is a way to search for scholarships offered to students ONLY in the Atlanta Metro counties (Cobb included).  GREAT RESOURCE!!  We have a booklet of these scholarships in the counseling office as well.

American Chemical Society Scholars Program is awarding approximately 100 scholarships to minority students interested in chemical sciences (undergraduates, students transferring, and 2-year students intending to pursue degrees in chemical technology.) The amount of the scholarships varies from 2,500 for freshmen to up to $5,000 for juniors and seniors. SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes - $1000 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors every two weeks from October to May.  Apply at www.offtocollege.info.  Students can begin registering on September 15, 2008.  Free to enter and eligibility not based on GPA or financial aid.

 

Navy ROTC $180,000 Scholarship Opportunity - The NROTC $180,000 Scholarship pays full tuition and fees and provides an allowance for books and monthly stipend of $250 - $400 for 4 years of college.  This scholarship is offered to college-bound students who meet the following criteria:

US Citizen

Between ages of 17 and 23

High school junior at minimum, but no higher than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of college credit

Min SAT scores: 520 Math & 530 Critical Reading

Min ACT scores: 21 Math & 22 Verbal

With this scholarship you can study at the college of your choice, receive your bachelor degree in the major of your choice, and earn a commission as a Navy Officer.

This is not a comprehensive list of college scholarships (way too many to list)!!  College scholarship information is typically readily available on the college website, so be sure to look there if you don't see information here.  See your counselor if you have questions on where to look.  Future additions to this section will, in general, be those schools that Kell students apply to the most.

 

American University Frederick Douglass Scholarship Program Full and partial scholarships available based on academic achievement, leadership, community service. Application deadline is January 15, 2009.  Scholarship forms available in the career center.   

 

George W. Jenkins Scholarship, University of Miami This 4-yr. scholarship is awarded to students based on academic merit, financial need and an essay.  The award is valued at more that $45,000 annually.  For applications and additional information go to: www.miami.edu/jenkins

 

Virginia Military Institute  Awards are for $5,000 and up.  Applicants must have a 1300 SAT or 29 ACT, 3.7 GPA, and rank in the top 10% of their class.  Applications must be received by February 1, 2009.  Application and additional information is available in the career center.

Washington University in St. Louis - Washington University is seeking nominations for scholarships for students interested in attending.  Qualities include maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to the community.  If you are interested in attending this university, please see your counselor to see if you qualify.

 

Johnson & Wales University Chancellor Scholarship range from $5,000 to full tuition. www.jwu.edu  JWU was founded with a distinct focus on career preparation and professional development.  Scholarship consideration is automatically part of the application process.
