As one of the original Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County (MGVOCC) to become involved with Kemp, I have been happy to be working with the students, parents, teachers, and then Principal Peggy Hollis since the first meeting to walk through the undressed school site. A garden is truly like a party dress for a public building! For four years we have met for two hours a week after school and also every week during the summer to construct, plant, harvest and weed the outdoor classroom landscape, and its adjacent vegetable and flower gardens. Our goal is to encourage our neighborhood children, their parents, siblings and friends to get dirty in the best way possible. To bring their natural curiosity and love of their Mother Earth to enhance the place where they spend so much of their young lives. MGVOCC's motto is growing good gardeners. At Kemp the seeds of the future are firmly taking root in the nurturing soil of the Kemp Community Gardens.

As a mother of five, none of whom have ever attended Kemp Elementary, and a grandmother of four, I take great pleasure in working with the children of my community to enhance their lives and expand their horizons by building on their gardening interests. Besides volunteering at Kemp, and being a substitute teacher, I am a student at North Metro Technical College earning a degree in Environmental Horticulture. I enjoy being a member of NMTC's competitive team each year at the National Horticulture Olympics-PLANET. I live in Echo Mill and many of you may know my home, reliably over decorated at Halloween and Christmas. I recently completed a three month Advanced Professional Internship at Disney Animal Kingdom. And yes, it was really exciting and a great opportunity and adventure!

Wendy Andrew, who is in the phtoto with me, is the boss of all horticulture for the Disney's Animal Kingdom and its resorts.

Judy McGowen-Master Gardener Volunteer
I am Judy McGowen, Cobb Master Gardener volunteer with the Kemp Community Gardens and Junior Master Gardeners. I have been working with this garden and gardeners since 2002 and enjoy the kids’ enthusiasm. We are very lucky to have many volunteer master gardeners, teachers and parents who work with us on a regular basis.

I have two grown children and two grandsons who I enjoy keeping one day a week. I retired from BellSouth in 2000 after a 30 year career. I am currently a member of the Cobb County Master Gardeners Board and work on a variety of Cobb community projects. I enjoy working in my own garden, which is primarily shaded and also have a water garden with koi (Japanese gold fish).
