POP

Power Over Prejudice-POP Club)

A weekly before school club comprised of formerly trained 8th graders and ten teacher referred 7th graders who display an interest in diversity, leadership potential or strong peer presence and are academically stable.  The mission of the club is to “spread awareness and create an environment free of prejudice.”  Selected Seventh graders are accompanied by School Social Worker October to Georgia Tech for training with the Anti-Prejudice Consortium. School wide activities are planned all year long which include a diversity in May and mural painting in the theater entitled,  “All Colors Show to Me, Our Community’s Rich Diversity," for '07-'08. The purpose of POP is to:

-To increase awareness and understanding of the many forms of prejudice students encounter within their schools, including stereotypes related to ethnicity, race, religion, disability, culture and economic differences.

-To provide an educational opportunity and safe forum for students of diverse backgrounds to talk, exchange ideas and interact.

To allow students to gain valuable insight into their roles and responsibilities in reducing prejudice and hate.

-To empower students with the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in themselves and their school communities.

Science Olympiad

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD consists of a team of students who enjoy scientific problem solving.
Activities range from hands-on labs to building projects ahead of time (cars, bottle rockets, catapults, Rube-Goldberg machine, etc.), to testing your knowledge in a specific subject, like anatomy, geology,  astronomy or scientific process.  We prepare together in weekly meetings (some extra time is required at home to be successful) and compete as a team.  Last year we went all the way to the State competition in Augusta.  This year... who knows?  All you need is enthusiasm, self-motivation and a love of science.
The success of the Simpson Team in competition with other schools would be enhanced with participation of parent volunteers at our weekly practices.
We meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 - 5:30 PM  Parent volunteers are still needed.
