This year I
made the decision to build quiet time into my schedule; time to do
things that I like to do. I
thought, “I think I’ll read more.”
So I set out to find books that I felt would enrich me both
personally and professionally. I
chose the book, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, opened it
to the first page, and commenced to read.
The very first line read, “It’s not about you.”
I paused for a moment to ponder the thought.
In my selfishness, I countered, “Then who is it about?”
After walking the halls, visiting classrooms, and talking to
students day in and day out, it wasn’t long before I realized who and
what it’s really about. Our
purpose here is to serve children in ways that they’ll remember for
the rest of their lives. Sure,
we provide them with life long learning tools by focusing on academics,
but ultimately, our goal is to cultivate those intangible qualities such
as integrity, honesty, civility, and generosity.
We do this in an effort to prepare them for an increasingly
complex world in which their sense of self will often be challenged.
Our desire is that they are equipped to combat the struggles of
the world with confidence and perseverance.
If we achieve this goal, much of our work for tomorrow is done.
We
look forward to having you join in our efforts to impact positive change
for the future by meeting our children where they are today.
See
you in the future,
Dr. Barbara L. Swinney
