Description

SKCS3:Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities.
a.   Use ordinary hand tools and instruments to construct, measure (for example: balance scales to determine heavy/light, weather data, nonstandard units for length), and look at objects (for example: magnifiers to look at rocks and soils).
b.   Make something that can actually be used to perform a task, using paper, cardboard, wood, plastic, metal, or existing objects (for example: paper plate day and night sky models).

Online Activities
  • Videomath: Size- United Streaming video in which HT solves problems with his knowledge of size and measurement.  Students use scientific investigations to discover properties of matter. Includes teacher's guide. (Must be logged onto United Streaming for link to open).

  • Discovering Math: Measurement- United Streaming video that introduces students to properties of measurement. Includes teacher's guide and black line masters. (Must be logged onto United Streaming for link to open).

  • Peep and the Big Wide World: Spring Thing/Springy Thingy- United Streaming/ TLC video in which Peep waits for Spring. Kids learn to recycle trash to create contraptions. (Must be logged onto United Streaming for link to open).

  • BBC's About Weather page allows children to experience the different things that makes weather.

  • Web Weather for Kids gives information on how to predict weather, types of clouds, etc.

  • The Weather Classroom is the Weather Channel's site for weather activities and lesson for kids.

  • Scholastic's Weather Watch allows children to observe weather, gather data, and create their own weather instruments.
