Mrs. Vassell Mitchell's favorite book is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.  It is an excellent example of the triumph of the human spirit.  Mrs. Angelou's story inspires us to never allow adversity to hold us back."

Mrs. Blake's favorite books are the Henry and Mudge Series. She absolutely loves them! They are all so cute, she can't stand it.

How about you? What's your favorite book? Everybody has one.  There are many books that are voted on yearly by committees or citizens like you for outstanding illustration or writing. Here are the most popular American children's book awards. Click on the name of the award listed below to visit the organizations' website and view their most recent list of winners. 

Caldecott Award

The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the illustrator of the most outstanding picture book.  The award is presented by the Association for Library Service to children in honor of Randolph Caldecott, one of the most distinguished English illustrators of his time. 

Georgia Children's Book Award

This Georgia award began in 1969 to encourage reading as a regular part of the curriculum in grades 4 through 8.  It is sponsored by the University of Georgia. Georgia school children may vote for their favorite book after reading at least three titles on the master list. Coretta Scott King Award

This award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table. It is granted to an African-American author and illustrator whose work promotes world unity and peace and serves as an inspiration to young people.  The award is named after Mrs. King for her courage and determination. 

Newbery Award

Named after John Newbery, the first publisher of children's periodicals, the Newbery Medal is awarded each year to the author with the greatest contribution to children's literature.
