Georgia Academic Placement and Promotion for 8th Grade Students

This site is designed to give access to a variety of resources to inform you of of the promotion and placement policy and provide resources to answer your questions. This information is taken from a flyer produced by the Georgia Dept of Ed and sent home to every eighth grade parent with progress reports on April 30th, 2008.

The Georgia Academic Placement and Promotion Policy requires that students in eighth grade meet or exceed expectations on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in Reading and Mathematics in order to be promoted. The policy enacts state law (Code Sections 20-2-282 through 20-2-285) that was passed by the state legislature. The goal is to assure that students are performing at grade level in these key academic areas before moving on to the next grade.

Suggestions for Parents

  • Study the list of academic expectations for eighth graders (www.georgiastandards.org)
  • Talk daily with your child about homework as well as work being done in class
  • Read with your student and discuss what you have read
  • Work closely with your child's teachers
  • Support the work of the school
  • If a student does not perform at or above grade level on the Reading and Mathematics CRCT, the school will notify the parent or guardian in writing within 10 days of receiving the scores.

    Notification will include:

  • The student's performance on the CRCT
  • The date of the retest to be given to the student
  • The summer school program or additional instruction to which the student is assigned
  • The possibility that the student may be retained
  • Students must be retested on the Reading and/or Mathematics CRCT if they did not meet or exceed expectations. If the student does not meet expectations on the retest, the parent must be notified in writing of the decision to retain the student and instructions on how to appeal the decision.

    Placement Committee

If a parent appeals the decision, the principal must create a placement committee composed of the parent(s) or guardian(s), the principal or a designee, and the appropriate teacher. The committee will:

  • Review the overall academic achievement of the student
  • Provide a plan of continuous assessment during the subsequent school year to monitor progress
  • Determine that, when given acceleration, differentiated, or additional instruction, the student will be likely to perform at grade level the next year
  • The committee must be unanimous in its decision to promote the student. If the placement committee decides not to promote the student, the local board of education may or may not allow appeals.

    Special Education

For special education students, the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) committee shall serve as the placement committee. The IEP supersedes the state law.
