Standard School Attire Proposal

In our continuous effort to create the best learning environment possible for our kids, the Birney School Council is considering the option of Standard School Attire for Birney students.

The various benefits of Standard School Attire include:

q       Higher student achievement

q       Improved overall behavior of students

q       Reduced discipline referrals

q       Increased attendance rates

q       Increased school security  (trespassers on campus are more easily identifiable)

The proposed Standard School Attire would be:

q       TOPS (solid color) - white, yellow, light blue, or dark blue polo-style shirt, collared shirt or turtleneck.

q       BOTTOMS (solid color) - khaki or dark colored jeans, pants, skirts, or shorts.

Shirts will be tucked in and belts worn if pants have belt loops.  For safety and comfort, all students would also be asked to wear tennis shoes each day. With the variety of options that Birney is considering, it will be possible to easily purchase a complete outfit (top and bottom) for as little as $15.00 at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Dollar General, Burlington, or Target.

At the start of the 2008-2009 school year, we are proposing to have the Standard School Attire worn Monday – Thursday and one (1) “choice day” on Friday.
