History of Brown Elementary

Brown Elementary opened in the fall of 1955. The school is named for Gregory B. Brown, a business and community leader in the Smyrna area. The land on which the school is located originally housed a farm that belonged to the Brown family. Mr. Brown's daughter donated the land to the Cobb County School District. The original building was quite small. Several additions to the school, including a cafeteria, media center, administrative suite, and primary wing, have been made over the years. Brown's first principal, Harold Hayes, served the school for 22 years. Many of Brown's staff members have served the school for more than 15 years. As a result, there is great loyalty to the school among the staff. Several of Brown's current students come from families of long-time Smyrna residents. Two or three generations of these families have attended the school.
