Planning for Middle School Students
National Standards for Career Development
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) has established national standards for school counseling programs that include career development, academic development and personal/social development as the most important factors in student success. The following national standards for career development are included in the CCSD school counseling curriculum:
Standard
A.
Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to
knowledge of self, and to make informed career decisions.
Standard B. Students will employ strategies to achieve future career
success and satisfaction.
Standard C. Students will understand the relationship between personal
qualities, education and training, and the world of work.
The World of Work in the 21st Century:
· Work situations and skills needed for employment will constantly change
· Almost half of the working population will change jobs during a three year period
· Retraining and upgrading skills will be required in most careers
· Two-thirds of the jobs will require education beyond high school
