Great Depression


Introduction:

In the book, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, we read the story of fourteen-year-old Billie Joe's life during the Great Depression.  Her mother has died and Billie Joe is unable to play the piano due to burns on her hands.  Her resolve to move beyond tragedy brings Billie Joe out of the dust.

Task:

During the Great Depression people lost lives, homes, and jobs.  As you complete the activities you will discover information about the impact the Great Depression had on our society.

1.  The Stock Market:
 a.  Read about the "Bull Market."  What are three of the reasons Americans invested in the stock market in the 1920's?
 b.  What began happening on October 24, 1929?  What is October 29, 1929 known as?
2.  Herbert Hoover:
a.  What were some of his measures to handle the Great Depression?
b.  What caused him to lose the next election?
3.  The Dust Bowl:
a.  What states were most affected?
b.  What caused the Dust Bowl?
4.  Soup Kitchens:
a.  What kinds of people came to the soup kitchens?
b.  What kinds of people or organizations established soup kitchens?
 5.  New Deal:
a.  What were three reasons these programs were developed?
b.  Which programs are still in effect today?

Evaluation:

Choose one of the topics above.  Create a sign with text and graphics illustrating what you learned about this topic.

Conclusion:

Life was difficult for people like us during the Great Depression.  After reading about the experiences of how people survived the Great Depression we can learn about determination, strength of character, and the will to survive.
