Middle School Foreign Language Program

Students in the 8th grade who have scored at or above the 60th percentile on the reading comprehension section of a nationally normed standardized test taken during the fifth or sixth grades may take a foreign language class in lieu of a reading class.  Spanish is offered at each middle school during the regular school day to qualified students.  French is offered at the discretion of the middle school principal at various middle schools within the district.

Additionally, the foreign language division offers a before or after school language class for any 8th grade student interested in foreign language study.  These courses are offered for students who did not meet the eligibility requirements for foreign language study during the middle school day, for students who did not wish to forego the 8th grade reading class, or for students who are enrolled in either the French or Spanish class and wish to add a second foreign language.  Middle school principals have the flexibility of offering Latin, German, French, or Spanish as language offerings for the before or after school program.  This program is offered under the generosity of the Cobb County Board of Education.

At the conclusion of the 8th grade year of foreign language study (either during the school day or in the before or after school program), students who successfully complete the course will be awarded a final grade of “P” for pass and one unit of high school credit will be recorded on the high school transcript.  Students who wish to continue the language studied in middle school would enroll in the second year foreign language class at the local high school or select another foreign language for high school study.
