Making the move from elementary to middle school can be exciting and challenging for students and parents. While everyone makes many transitions during their lifetime, the transition from elementary to middle school can bring about many questions and concerns. Some parents and students consider the transition to middle school a major stepping-stone on the road to becoming an adult (NAESP, 2002). For the past five or six years, your child has participated in the elementary school program and you have known what to expect at school. You knew the policies of the school and how to help your child have a successful experience. Moving to middle school can provoke a myriad of concerns, emotions, and behaviors for young adolescents and their parents. Not only do students experience stress during this transition, but parents re often concerned about the welfare of their children during this stage of development. You and your child may have many questions, fears, and even misconceptions. To address these feelings and to prepare your family for middle school, we have created this advisement handbook. This handbook will address the following: Cobb County School District Vision and Mission Characteristics of the Middle School Child (Intellectual and Physical) Characteristics of the Middle School Child (Psychological and Social) Characteristics of the Middle School Report Cards, Schedules, Gifted, and Teams Differences in Elementary and Middle Schools Foreign Language Program (Part 1) Foreign Language Program (Part 2) Expectations in Middle School (Organization) Expectations in Middle School (Study Routines and Reminders) Social Issues in Middle School Parental Involvement in Middle School School Personnel in Middle School Concerns of Middle School Students Career Planning in Middle School (National Standards) Career Planning in Middle School (Helping Your Child) Tips for Middle School Parents (Part 1) Tips for Middle School Parents (Part 2) Links for a Successful Middle School Experience (Education and Safety) Links for a Successful Middle School Experience (Career Planning) Links for a Successful Middle School Experience (General Education) “You cannot discover new oceans unless you are willing to lose sight of the shore.” - Andre Gide
