Our Program

At Chalker Elementary, we have three school counselors. During the 2005-2006 school year, Mrs. Binzer works with the students in Second, Third, and Fifth grades. Mrs. Kotarba, half-time counselor, works with Kindergarten and facilitates our Student Support Team. Mrs. Sutton (Becker), also half-time, works with First and Fourth grade levels. All of the counselors teach classroom guidance in all classes, and we also offer individual and small group counseling.

Classroom Guidance

Students focus on three different curriculum areas during classroom guidance. The three Cobb County strands are Academic Development, Career Development, and Personal/Social Development. Each grade level has Essential Skills that are delivered to all students.

Small Group Counseling

Small Group Counseling is offered three times per school year. Each group lasts for six or more weeks, depending upon the group members' needs. Some of the small groups offered at Chalker are Friendship, Changing Families, Grief/Loss, Dealing with a Family Illness, etc. Your child could be recommended for a small group by either your child's teacher, their counselor, or by yourself. Parents must give written permission for children to participate in a small group.

Individual Counseling

The counselors can also see students on an individual basis. Students may need some one-on-one attention on how to get along with classmates, how to deal with stress or anxiety, how to succeed in school, etc. The counselors will usually meet with individual students for three to four times.  If necessary, your child might be recommended for further counseling, such as a small group.
