Second and Third Grade—Cowboys of the West

“Cowboys of the Wild West is an interdisciplinary unit designed to give students an understanding of the culture of settlers of the American Frontier and their pioneer spirit.  Students will investigate the lives of men and women who made significant contribution to the development of the west.  Students will explore the rich language and vocabulary that is associated with cowboys and ranches, research historical figures, and develop an understanding of their daily lives.  Students will work independently and cooperatively on problem solving activities using higher level thinking skills.

The unit will provide students with opportunities to experience literature in order to comprehend the interpersonal relationships of frontiersmen.

How was their life compared to ours?  What kinds of technology were available to assist them in their daily lives on the trail?  What is pioneer spirit?  Could we do it today?
