Swine and Dandy
Swine N’ Dandy is a broad-based thematic unit on pigs. Students will use research skills, employing both text and internet resources, to locate information related to swine. The unit also includes many wordplay activities and opportunities for students to create original pig-related works, using both verbal/linguistic and visual/spatial skills. Also, brain-
Teasers and math/logic activities give students the opportunity to work on problem-solving skills. As a culminating activity, students may complete a multiple intelligences project of choice and celebrate with a student-planned “pignic”.
Unit Objectives:
1. Students will apply research skills to the study of pigs.
2. Students will apply creative problem solving skills to pig-related activities.
3. Students will develop an appreciation for the value of pigs to humans.
4. Students will utilize creative thinking to write original wordplay on a pig theme.
5. Students will complete a long-term project selected from a list of multiple intelligence projects and will present the project to the class.
Assessment:
1. Teacher will use pre and posttests to determine student learn.
2. Students and teacher will use a rubric to evaluate projects and presentations.
3. Teacher will assess students’ progress informally through daily observation.
