Accelerated Reader is a computer-based reading management program that helps students improve their reading and comprehension skills.

Over 4500 books in the Compton Media Center are marked with a colored dot on the spine.  Each colored dot represents the level of the book.  The number of points the book is worth are determined by the content and vocabulary of the text as well as by the number of questions the students answers correctly on the corresponding test.
1st grade    white dot
2nd grade    red dot
3rd grade    green dot
4th grade    yellow dot
5th grade    dark blue dot
6th grade    light blue dot
7th grade    white dot, marked with grade level

Students select a book according to their reading level.  After they read the book, they take a test about the book on a computer.  For every test they pass, students earn points.  Students accumulate points to win different prizes.  When they decide to turn their points in for a prize, they fill out a prize form sheet and turn it in to the media center.  A PTA volunteer delivers the prize to the student.
