Confident. Prepared. Relaxed. Well-rested.  These are the traits of successful test takers.  How can you ensure that your middle grader does his best on standardized tests? Try these ideas to help before, during, and after tests.

 Before:

Understand the purpose.  Let your child know that these tests are used to measure how he is doing in school.  The CRCT is based on each grade level's curriculum.  It's the students' chance to show what they know.  The results are used for placement in Foreign Language, math, and reading. The results also let teachers know which skill areas need more attention.

During:

Take extra supplies. Just in case, have extra #2 pencils sharpened and ready to go.

Follow directions. Read all directions slowly and carefully.

Use time wisely. Do not spend too much time on one question.

Read every answer.

Make good guesses.

Stay in order.

Check answers. If you finish in the allotted time, check over your answers for that section.

After:

Celebrate! After all, anything worth learning is worth celebrating!

Share the results. When you receive the results of this and any test, go over them together. If you have any questions, the teachers and guidance counselors are happy to assist you.
