SCHOOL DRESS CODE

The Cobb County School District recognizes that the dress and grooming of students both individually and collectively are significant factors in the successful operation of our educational program. We believe that one of the educational responsibilities of the school is to help make students aware that appropriate appearance and hygiene are conducive to the well being of themselves and others.
Each student will be expected to maintain a standard of dress and grooming that is consistent with the level of formality of the school situation. We seek the assistance of parents in monitoring their children’s clothing to ensure that it is appropriate to the classroom.
Clothing which is distracting, disruptive, or creates an unsafe situation may not be worn to school. If a child is not appropriately dressed, a parent may be contacted. The dress code applies to all school functions.
These minimum standards should help define appropriate school dress:
  • Clothing must be modest and not revealing or provocative. Tank tops and halters are not permitted. Cleavage must not show. Short shorts and cutoffs are not permitted.
  • Clothing shall be worn as it was intended – overalls secured over both shoulders, pants with both legs down, etc.
  • Clothing must not reveal underwear. Shirts/Dresses must not be see through or reveal the midriff.
  • Sun dresses must be worn with a jacket.
  • Spandex type pants or bike shorts are not allowed.
  • No headgear is to be worn inside the building at any time. This includes hats, stocking caps, do-rags, bandanas, and forehead bands.
  • Bandanas are prohibited.
  • Students may not wear clothing that displays or advertises obscene slogans or signs, profanity, or any substance illegal for minors, such as beer, tobacco, etc.
  • Clothing or ornamentation advocating, promoting, or suggesting illegal activity is prohibited.

This list is not inclusive, We reserve the right to determine whether or not clothing is appropriate for school. The principal or her designee shall be the final judge as to the appropriateness, neatness, and cleanliness of the wearing apparel and whether it is disruptive or in violation of the dress code.

SCHOOL GOALS

Student success is always a goal at Daniell Middle School. Since you have recently received grades for the first nine weeks of school, this would be a good time to talk with your students about their performance in school thus far. Some questions to use as a catalyst for this discussion include: Do your grades reflect your ability? Do you think you have done your best work? Have you taken each assignment and/or requirement seriously? Are you taking responsibility for your own learning? Encourage your students to make necessary adjustments if they are not satisfied with their performance. Your encouragement along with several key strategies that we are implementing at school will go a long way in promoting student engagement in the learning process.

Another goal identified for this year is "All students will read at or above grade level." This is a goal that we carry over from year to year, changing strategies as needed and implementing new instructional materials to address areas of concern. We offer specialized reading instruction for students of varied reading abilities. We have extended these opportunities to time outside of the regular school day by offering reading classes before and after school. We hope our continuous assessment of reading instruction at Daniell, your students’ effort in improving their reading, and your support of our goals will help us achieve significant gains in reading achievement with all of our students. On the CRCT test given last spring, 86% of our sixth grade students, 87% of 7th graders, and 91% of our eighth grade students met or exceeded reading expectations. While these numbers are admirable, we hope to continuously move students out of "below expectations" and up to grade level. Please encourage your students to participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. Students who read often become better readers.

Our third goal for the year is to implement strategies and activities which will increase and improve math skills.
