Dear Davis Community:

September is a special month in the life of  our school year.  Students are now familiar with their teacher, with his/her expectations and routines, and with their classmates.  Learning has begun and will continue now that routines are securely in place.  We look forward to celebrating your child’s academic successes this year.

We have a few special events happening in our school.  I hope you are helping your child practice that special smile in preparation for Picture Day on September 11.  Early Release then follows on September 16.  Students will leave school at 12:30 while teachers are learning here on site.

First, Third, and Fifth Grade students will participate in fall testing. The CogAT  will be administered on September 17 and 18.  This is a nationally normed test which gives some estimate of a student’s ability compared with other students in the nation.  Then, third and fifth grade students will take the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) on September 22-26.  This test is also nationally normed.  It compares a student’s achievement to similar students across the nation.  Of course, you can support your child during this testing by helping him/her get a good night’s rest, a nutritious breakfast, and a positive start to the day.

With the coming of fall, please encourage your child to read, to observe the changes around us, and to exercise in the beautiful outdoors.

Have a happy month full of learning,

Lucia Brown
