Sixth grade science consists of a full year study of physical science.  Students explore the many different topics of physical science by participating in a variety of activities.  Students will learn how to "think like scientists" by making observations, inferences, and predictions.  Students will gain scientific knowledge by participating in the scientific processes of measuring, analyzing, and evaluation.

First Semester consists mainly of those topics which concern:  Scientific Inquiry and Energy and Its Transformations
Content:   Time line:
Lab Rules,  Safety, and Procedures  Scientific Methods & Processes

Introduction

3-4 weeks
Metric System of Measurement Sec. 1.2, notes & handouts  3-4 weeks
Energy and Its Transformations Chapters 13 & 14 3-4 weeks
Introduction to Matter Sec. 1.1 & 1.3 3-4 weeks
Solids, Liquids, & Gases Sec. 2.1 - 2.4 3-4 weeks
Characteristics of Waves (Sound & Light) Chapters 15 - 18 7-8 weeks

Second Semester consists of those topics concerning: Physics and Chemistry

Content:  Motion & Forces   Chapters 9-12   7-8 weeks
Chemistry     Chapters 3-6 7-8 weeks

The textbook is:  Prentice Hall Science Explorer Physical Science, published by Prentice Hall, 2002.  The replacement cost is approximately $52.00.  A CD of the textbook is also available.  Students will also be registered to use the iText version of their textbook on the internet at www.phsuccess.net.  A Guided Reading workbook is issued to each student as a consumable.  Replacement costs for the CD and GR workbook is $10.00 based on availability.

Special Projects/Activities:  Sixth graders may be asked to participate in a science fair type project.  Outside projects are often assigned to a unit of study.  These projects are usually due 2-4 weeks after being assigned.  Each project will have a rubric for grading purposes and will usually be weighted as a quiz or a test grade.

Grading:  The following grading scale will be used:  A=90-100  B=80-89  C=74-79  D=70-73  F=69 and below

The following weights will be given to the assessment process:
Tests (one per chapter or unit)/projects/reports/presentations/notebooks                40%
Quizzes (including spelling/vocabulary)   20%
Class work (notebook assignments)   15%
Homework  (various activities which include question & answers, worksheets, etc.) 15%
Participation (scores from cooperative group activities & labs) 10%

The following schedule will be followed for communication with parents:

    1st semester 2nd semester
4 1/2 weeks  Efficiency and deficiency report
9 weeks Mid-semester progress report October 18-22 March 21
14 1/2 weeks Efficiency and deficiency report
18 weeks Semester report cards  January 7  May 31
