Class began
with a big Welcome Back! Much
of class today was spent getting to
know one another. Students
were able to discuss their
activities from the summer and learn
about their new instructor.
Students
were then given the
Class Syllabus and items
on it were discussed. Students
should get their supplies for class
as soon as possible (Friday is the
deadline). In addition,
students should share the material
from their syllabi with their
parents.
The end of
class was filled by the
Georgia Studies Pretest.
This "test" will not be graded, but
instead filed away to look back upon
at the end of the year.
Students guessed on most of the
questions as we haven't covered that
material yet.

Today in
class, we spent time reviewing
Class Procedures.
Student were introduced to
procedures for starting and ending
class, making up missed work, and
finding their graded assignments.
Students
were given their first
Daily Trivia Sheet and
their first
What's Going On In Social Studies
sheet, which will be used throughout
the year at the start and end of
class.
Lastly,
students were given their own copy
of the
Class Rules so that they
could keep them in their binders.

Today in
class, we spent a good amount of
time discussing time zones and why
they exist. Students acted out
the rotation of the globe in an
attempt to illustrate where and when
the light of the sun hits the Earth
Following our
discussion, students read a short
Time Zone Reading.
While reading the article, students
were asked to highlight what they
thought was important without
highlighting more than 50% of any
one paragraph. After
completing the reading, students
answered
Time Zone Questions.
If the questions were not completed
during class, they were assigned for
homework.

Class began
with a discussion of Georgia's
location. We discussed the
difference between absolute and
relative locations. Absolute
is exact and relative compares one
location to another. i.e.
"Georgia is east of Alabama."
We then went
over and collected the
Time Zone Question
from yesterday.
We then
spent time reviewing latitude and
longitude with a grid on the
classroom floor. Students used
the grid to demonstrate how to use a
set of coordinates to find a
location on the globe.
Lastly,
students worked in groups to
complete a sheet titled
Mr. Stanley, International Man of
Mystery. This was
designed to review longitude and
latitude skills further.

The trivia
question today was in regard to
regions. We discussed the
three types of regions (Population,
Geographic, & Political) and gave
examples for each.
Students were
then given time to finish their
International Man of Mystery
sheets from yesterday. As a
class we went though the answers
together and the sheets were kept as
notes.
Students
were then checked to see if they had
gotten their
Syllabus signed and if
they had gotten their 3-ring binder
and dividers. Points were
given to students for each of these
tasks. We then took a moment
to organize notebooks and label the
dividers as follows:
Current Work
Daily Trivia
Notes
What's Going On
Graded Work
Students
were then introduced to the class
podcast, which can be subscribed to
by clicking
here.
The podcast contains audio
recordings of the textbook and will
contain weekly reviews of class
content.
At the end of class, students were
given a
Take Home Geography Test.
The material on the test covers the
basics of geography that students
will be expected to know from this
point forward. Some of the
material was covered in previous
social studies classes and some has
been covered this week. The
test will be due on Tuesday.
