DMS School Improvement
Reading Implementation Goals

Dickerson Advisement Plan 2008-2008

Documentation of 25 books for every student

Reading for Pleasure:

Students will keep a Monthly Book Log of all their pleasure reading books.

Summer Reading:  Students are required to read three books.  Book cards will be due Sept. 10th.  Follow instructions on the web site for summer reading.  (See summer reading list)

Book of the Month

Each month students will be required to read one book of his/her choice.  Each month in advisement teachers will check students’ agendas to see if they have listed the book they have read. There will be a different type of notation/documentation sheet for students to use.  Parents should initial to verify reading.

We will use the honor system on this.  As we inform students and parents regarding this, we will emphasize character education words as to why we are doing it this way.

  1. These terms will be emphasized for the monthly reading. Hopefully guiding students to think and apply these terms to school and future endeavors.:
    1. Organization – this is what you do before you do something
    2. Priorities – good things happen when you get your priorities straight (ie pass the reading CRCT because you practiced)
    3. Relationships- proving to your parents that you are taking responsibility and building positive relationships by completing your reading on a monthly basis.
    4. Goal Setting- Fly and you will catch the wind – set your reading goal
    5. Determination – commitment to read each month
    6. Self-esteem – you can build you OWN self esteem by really reading a book each month.   Completion of a goal makes everyone feel better.
    7. Responsibility – Students don’t understand that not only can they make a difference, but it is their responsibility to do so…
    8. Honor and Character – Did you really read or did your parents just initial and say you did?  The ultimate measure of a man or woman is not where he/she stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he/she stands at times of challenge and controversy.  (MLK. Jr.)

No note cards, no grades, etc. Just reading because it is the right thing to do!   Each advisement teacher may do book talks, etc to promote really great books as a choice for the advisement time.
