Accelerated Reader and STAR

Accelerated Reader and STAR software programs have been implemented to improve students' reading comprehension and increase overall student achievement.

Accelerated Reader is a reading motivation program that combines the best in children's literature with easy to use software.  The program operates by students selecting a book of their choice from the Dowell AR titles list, taking a computerized comprehension test on the book, and earning points based upon the number of correct answers and the book's length and reading level.  In addition to motivating students to read more and improve reading scores, Accelerated Reader provides current assessment and helps to foster a love for reading.

STAR also measures students' reading comprehension through computerized testing, but its focus is the measurement of reading improvement.  Student reports give a reading level range that can be used as a guide for selecting Accelerated Reader books.
