CRCT is OVER!

Have you noticed that students and staff at Dowell Elementary have much bigger smiles on now?  These smiles are signs that we have completed the 2008 CRCT.   That’s right, the students have tried their best on the CRCT and we are now awaiting the results from the state!  We are confident that our tradition of excellence will be evident in the results!  Of course, as soon as we get the results, we will share them with parents!

CRCT is Almost Here

We are a little over a week away from the administration of the Georgia CRCT.  We will begin administration on April 23, 2008 and conclude on Tuesday, April 30.  Please make sure you child gets a good night rest before test day.  Furthermore, please make sure they have a good breakfast and arrive at school on time.  Students that are tardy will not be permitted to enter classrooms that have started testing.  Lastly, encourage your child to do his or her best and let them know that you are proud of their effort!

USDA Issues Beef Recall

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recalled several beef products processed by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company. The company is under investigation for inhumane practices involving cattle. The Cobb County School District was notified Feb. 1, 2008 that beef products from Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company were being placed on “hold”. The District immediately pulled these products and they were not served to Cobb County students. Now, these beef products have been recalled and the meat will be destroyed following strict USDA procedures. There have been no reports of illness in our Georgia School Systems related to the school lunch program. The District will continue serving beef products not affected by the recall. The school system's Food and Nutrition Services contracts with food processing plants to process raw ground beef into fully cooked products before it is ever delivered to our schools. Every possible precaution is taken to ensure that the products served to our students are safe.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Cynthia Downs, Executive Director of Food and Nutrition Services (770-426-3380 or 770-426-3383 or cynthia.downs@cobbk12.org), or June Wolfenbarger, Food and Nutrition Services Purchasing Agent (770-514-3859 or june.wolfenbarger@cobbk12.org).

New Car Riders Procedure in the Morning

In order to ensure the safety of all our students, we are restructuring the way our students are arriving by car in the morning.  The parking lot will be blocked at the North entrance of the school parking lot.  In addition, there will only be one line of cars dropping students off.  If you need to park in the parking lot, you will have to drive through the car line and take a left into the South entrance.  While driving through the parking lot, we are asking all drivers to not be on their cell phone.  The drop off line can be a very busy lane and we want to make sure no one is distracted.  Lastly, because of serious safety concerns, the crossing guard will no longer send cars down the bus lane while busses are arriving.  Thank you for your flexibility.
