Announcing A New Program at East Cobb Middle School
The Jack Smith Engineering and Robotics Program at East Cobb Middle School
is pleased to announce its first course offering. Mr. Stillwell will be
teaching a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) connections
class. Two classes will be offered at each grade level. New classes with
new activities and labs will form every nine-week period. Students will
be given the opportunity to apply their math and science skills in and
interesting and relevant hands-on program. The curriculum will be derived
from the math and science state performance standards for each grade level.
As East Cobb moves to become a performance-based school these hands-on
enrichment activities will be valuable resources. All students are invited
to consider taking part in this new STEM class.
How can your child be a part of this exciting new class? They will need
to fill out an application. Applications will be accepted for each nine
weeks. See the application deadlines below. They will need to answer
some basic questions and hand-write an essay as part of the application.
The essay should explain how you think you will benefit from this class.
You should also share any unique skills that you might be able to add
to the class. A team of math and science teachers as well as Mr. Stillwell
will evaluate student applications. Students will be evaluated on their
essays, classroom performance, and input from their classroom teachers.
We hope to have a cross-section of academic ability levels. The keys
here are motivation and work ethic. Students will be notified upon their
acceptance into the program.
Students will normally be allowed to take the class once each year.
If a student wishes to repeat the class they should reapply by the deadline.
Repeating students will be placed in the class if there are no new students
waiting to be placed. Accepted students will be placed in the class as
schedule conditions permit. It might be possible that a student would
have to wait for a nine-week period before being scheduled. Again, ALL
students are invited to apply. We look forward to reading the applications.
