History
- the school opened on September 3, 1963 and was called East Cobb Junior High
- there were 915 students and 44 faculty members the first year
- Wheeler High School wasn't built until 2 years later
- our current librarian, Mrs. Padgett, was a student at East Cobb Junior High the day it opened it doors!
- there was no air conditioning at the school the first 4 years!
- East Cobb Junior High had the first boy/girl dancing ever in Cobb County public school during the 1963-1964 school year. Even the Cobb County Superintendent of Schools came out to view it!
- among its famous students is Randy Edwards, a former professional football player with the Seattle Seahawks
- the school opened with only an 8th and 9th grade. A 7th grade was added the following year
- the school football team's first practice took place in the present day parking lot which was a grassy lot
- the construction costs for the original school building and gym was around $600,000, about what you would expect to pay for some of the new houses being built today in the ECMS school district!
- pushing and shoving in the halls was cited as a problem at East Cobb the first year it opened
- the school colors were maroon and white
- the school nickname was "The Rebels"
- the first day Wheeler opened as a school, its building wasn't ready. The Wheeler students went to school at East Cobb on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The East Cobb students came to school on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. After Christmas, the Wheeler building opened and everything went back to normal
- the original school consisted of the main building, the annex, and the gym, but there was no library or cafeteria. When the library and cafeteria were built and air conditioning was added 1967, the 7th grade students were sent to East Valley School for the year.
- the student yearbook was called Cobbweb
- the school newspaper was The Rebel Rouser
- the theater was built in 1987
- Pope High School in Cobb County is named in honor Alan Pope, a former East Cobb Junior High student, who was a star player on the Sprayberry High School championship basketball team of 1967. He later became the first boys basketball coach at Walton High School
- East Cobb Junior High became East Cobb Middle School in 1973
