Dear Parents and Guardians:

“CHALLENGE DAY”

Seventh grade students at ECMS participated in “Challenge Day”, January 8-11, 2008. This program was a daylong experience that was rooted in the understanding that drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, teasing, bullying, racism, and violence are merely symptoms of a greater problem; with the real problem being separation, isolation and loneliness. Students participated in highly interactive Challenge Day activities and discussions, which explored ways in which people separate themselves and others. It provided students with a chance to be totally real and honest, to experience what’s possible, and then to rise up as leaders - all in an atmosphere of fun, love, acceptance and respect. The goal was to increase personal power and self-esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive support, and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence, and all forms of oppression. Challenge Day inspired many, if not all of our student and adult participates to be the change they wish to see in their lives, school, community and the world. Several East Cobb Middle School students stood and spoke publicly to offer a challenge to themselves and their peers to STOP the oppression; some through tears, others with strong voices, but all with a sincere heart. .

This event was covered by the local media; Channel 11- NBC news, Marietta Daily Journal, and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.

Challenge Day was made possible through the East Cobb Middle School Foundation and the leadership of Starlet Riviera.  Their mission is to provide resources promoting academic excellence and cultural enrichment.

Our Cougar Pride celebration for the second quarter grading period will take place after conference week, on Friday, February 1, 2008.  It will be another great party; lots of eating and dancing.  Students making honor roll for the first time this year will receive a T-shirt with this year’s theme, “Mission Possible” - “Mission Accomplished.”

As we move into the second half of the year, I want to thank you for your support of East Cobb Middle School. Our success is strongly influenced by your continual dedication to your child(ren)’s education. This strong relationship will help us continue to reach our student achievement goals. We look forward to a successful second half of the year.
