Staff: Dawn Alexander, Media Specialist and Teresa Maxwell, Media Parapro

Ms. Alexander says:

I joined the staff of East Side Elementary School in the fall of 2002. Before coming to East Side, I was the media specialist at a middle school and an elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland.

I am lucky enough to have what I believe is the BEST job in the entire school! I get to spend time with students in all grade levels, work with computers, read all of the newest books, and produce a weekly TV show!

I am always excited to get to work each day! And no, that is NOT a picture of me in front of Randolph Caldecott's house. That is the star of our TV show -- Chef Bob! (To see me, roll your mouse over the picture of Chef Bob.)

Media Center Philosophy: The program of media services is the primary support function of all teaching and learning within the school program. The media center:

•Provides assistance in planning and implementing instruction.

•Provides materials that will support the curriculum; taking into consideration the various interests, abilities and maturity levels of the students it serves.

•Serves teachers by providing for the selection, use and circulation to the classroom of all types of media as tools for teaching and avenues for learning.

•Plays a vital role in developing a spirit of inquiry, self-motivation, self-discipline, and self-evaluation of those it serves.

•Provides opportunities through library media experiences that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards.

Media Program Goals:

1. To maintain a climate conducive to the students’ growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards.

2. To assist students in the development of the attitudes and skills which will enable them to become independent, lifelong learners.

3. To assist in the development of the curriculum and instructional program of the school and support the achievement of curricular and instructional goals.

4. To provide access to materials that support a wide range of student needs, abilities and interests.

5. To provide a framework for cooperatively planned, instructionally related, unified media services developed at the local level.
