Welcome to my Music page ! It's
a pleasure to bring Music into your child's lives. I feel it is an important
part of a well rounded education allowing a student to see the world from many different
perspectives. I incorporate reading, culture, language, math, social studies and
any other connection to life I can when I present music to my students. There's
always something new to learn every day! And I believe every child CAN learn if
they want to.
The music program is based upon the philosophy and practices of
Orff-Schulwerk, a dynamic approach to music education developed by the German
composer Carl Orff. This approach is characterized by active involvement in
music making through the body, voice, movement, and work on specially designed
Orff instruments. It recognizes the many doors through which the child can enter
the musical world, and provides opportunities for aural, visual, and kinesthetic
learners to feel and be successful in music via a multidimensional approach. The
nurturing of the whole musician who can hear, feel, understand and physically
express music contributes to the child's ability to synthesize the intellect,
senses, emotions, and physical body in ways that have important implications in
their total educational experience. The social dimensions of group music making
are also a central quality of the music program.
Curriculum Integration
Music is inherently a subject that requires and helps develop academic
skills. Though teaching music, as an independent discipline with its own skills
and knowledge is the priority, conscious integration with other curricular areas
is practiced widely. Examples of integration in the music classroom include
extensive work with rhyme, poem, and song as a catalyst for musical
improvisation and musical performance (language arts); exploring the structures
and form of music (mathematics); using songs and instrumental pieces to teach
history, geography, and cultures (social studies); understanding acoustics and
the function of various musical instruments (science); developing grace,
coordination, and dexterity through movement and instrumental play (PE);
learning songs in various languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean,
Nigerian, Azulu, Spanish, French, German, and Latin (foreign languages); and
experimenting with graphic notation and visual imagery (visual arts).
