5th Grade Curriculum

Language Arts
In the 5th grade Language Arts Curriculum, we will be studying realistic fiction, tall tales, historical fiction, nonfiction, narratives, poetry, folktales and fantasy. We will study these through novel studies, literature circles, and guided reading groups throughout the year.
In English, we will be concentrating on parts of speech, grammar, research skills, and applying the standard conventions of American English.
In Spelling, we will be learning conventional spelling patterns and applying knowledge of letter/sound relationships in word recognition. Students will also be applying the writing process by taking their personal pieces through the stages of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Creative story writing is encouraged as is organizing and using descriptive language. A formal writing assessment will be given in January to all fifth graders in the state, and a writing fair will also be held later in the school year.
Mathematics
The Math series provides our students with standards in math that will enable them to function in a society where the ability to problem solve and apply logic is an essential life skill. Our math curriculum is designed to engage our learners by motivating and challenging them to see the value of math in their world beyond the classroom. The basic skills are laid as a foundation to the curriculum with lessons in each chapter that stimulate children to investigate, question, reason, and apply sound thinking skills. Calendar Math, manipulatives, calculators, along
with computer technology, are all integrated into the framework of our program.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies program incorporates the teaching of history, geography, citizenship, and multicultural perspectives. The central theme is the study of American History. We begin with the Civil War and end with current events. As you can see, we cover a lot of territory in a short time.
Our series promotes the use of critical thinking by asking questions that involve general information, inference, and predictions. Cooperative learning groups, large group discussion, field trips, novel studies, and tests are implemented to encourage our students’ involvement in the study of American History.
Science
In our science curriculum we are using the text as well as the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum objectives, experiments, outdoor classrooms, and other resources. Our teaching techniques will include developmental centers, large and small grouping, projects, and the use of our outdoor classrooms as well as our new science lab.
