Purpose

To increase love of reading

Students read at independent level
·
Students select books based on interest
·
Students foster the habits of good readers

To read one million words at each grade level (each student)
Why one million words?
·
Children learn to read by reading!

The more words read, the more opportunities to learn vocabulary
·
Vocabulary knowledge leads to reading comprehension
The program continues …
·
All students read 25 books (Standards-based)
·
Students sign a contract committing to read 25 books and record
books read on their Book Logs (in Student Agenda Book)
·
All staff read 25 books and display titles on a list posted by
their classroom door
·
Students display responses to the literature they read in ELA
classrooms on 25 Books Walls (at least 5 books during the year)
·
ELA teachers will record and report monthly tallies for all
students.
·
Students will receive recognition for reaching the benchmark of
having read 25 books.
