Book of the Month for February
February 5, 2007
Dear Faculty, Students and Parents:
February’s Principal’s Book of the Month is The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson. This E. B. Lewis illustrated book captures a young African-American girl’s curiosity of a fence that divides her town into two areas – black and white. She doesn’t understand why her mother tells her to never go on the other side of the big fence.
The book’s main characters are Clover and Annie. Almost everyday Clover notices Annie sitting on the fence that divides their town. At first Annie asks if she can play with Clover and her friends but she is quickly told “No.” As the story unfolds, Clover and Annie learn more about each other and they show us that friendships should have no boundaries.
I hope that you enjoy The Other Side as much as my kids and I did. It was a great opportunity for me to explain how American society did not always allow the opportunity for children of all colors to be friends. I hope that everyone who reads this book realizes that the color of someone’s skin should not inhibit or discourage a personal relationship.
Happy reading, |
