Book of the Month for
January

January 10, 2006
Dear Faculty,
Students and Parents:
January’s principal’s book of the month is Bud, Not Buddy by
Christopher Paul Curtis. This Coretta Scott King award winning book captures
a young orphan’s quest to find his real dad. His journey is both
heartwarming and humorous.
The book’s main character is Bud, not Buddy. All Bud has is his common
sense, his suitcase of gadgets and memories and Bud Caldwell’s Rules and
Things for Having a Funnier Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself.
Throughout the story, Bud is searching to find the identity of his father.
His story is one of courage and resilience.
After reading Bud, Not Buddy, think about a time when you have been
resilient? What obstacles or challenges did you face? Who helped you with
your journey?
I hope that you enjoy Bud, Not Buddy as much as I did. I enjoyed
reading the description of life during the depression and wondering how
Bud’s journey would have been different if it had taken place in more recent
times. Mr. Curtis is an exceptional author and I know that you will add this
book to your list of favorites.
Happy reading,
Phillip D. Page, Ed.D.
